GENERAL DATA The architectural and artistic concept of Moscow metro station “Nagatinsky Zaton”
Base for the concept of the architectural and artistic solution of “Nagatinsky Zaton” station were well-known means of harmonizing artistic forms. It is recommended to create a narrowing-and-expanding form of rhythmic construction for finishing longitudinal walls, floors and ceilings of long corridors or platforms. Principle of Fibonacci sequence or harmony of the golden ratio serves as the basis of the rhythm.
It is recommended to use the method of visual transformation of space at the expense of tones – making them darker and consequently visually closer, in order to find solutions for transverse planes. It is also worthwhile to take advantage of space reduction by applying the compositional means shown in Fig. 1. Thanks to these methods, passengers will visually perceive the tunnel or platform shorter towards the end than it really is.
The so-called “Sierpinski carpet” or “Sierpinski square” is a fractal, one of the two-dimensional analogs of the Cantor set, proposed by the mathematician Vaclav Sierpinski. The Cantor set (Cantor’s discontinuum or Cantor dust) is the simplest fractal, a subset of the unit segment of the real line, serving as a classical introduction of the discountinuum in mathematical analysis. It was described by George Cantor in 1883. According to the authors, Sierpinski’s carpet is perfect for conveying the spirit of the “endless” metro corridors.
Self-reproducing mosaic or endless squares are mathematical monsters – infinitely repetitive iterations of geometric shapes, which create fascinating fractal drawings of stunning beauty. Modern architectural forms give rise to the controversy of postmodernists, advocates of robotization, digitization and parametrism. In the 21st century – a century of endless disputes between postmodernists, proponents of robotization, digitalization, parametrism, and yet it is still unknown how to call this manifestation in our reality, which we meet more and more often. Parametric and digital modeling on the basis of mathematical monsters of Sierpinski and Cantor set squares, served as the foundation for the artistic means of developing composition.
The project authors believe that such a pattern stresses innovative and modern approach of the Moscow subway. The rational square fits perfectly into the existing urban context of building the “Nagatinsky Zaton” station block. As for the color solutions of the walls, shades of gray-blue-green are offered (petroleum, sea-blue and turquoise). It is possible to use yellow and orange colors to achieve greater artistic expressiveness. With the help of various color techniques, it is possible to differentiate perception of opposing platforms, as well as the upper vestibules.
